4 1820s  By the 1820s, when the furs in known as the Ojibwa (or Chippewa), Onawa (or Ottawa), and Pottawatomie had been part of trade system for many generations.

7 Long Haul The expedition traveled over 8000 total miles over a period of 2 years, 4 months and 10 days.

8 More did you know? Good Guess When the expedition reached the Pacific, Clark estimates they have traveled 4,162 miles from the mouth of the Missouri to the Pacific. His guess was within 40 miles of the actual distance. What a Deal Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory, 820,000 square miles, for $15 million. After interest the final total came to be $27,267,622. That still works out to be only about 3¢ an acre!

9 Meriwether LewisMeriwether LewisMeriwether LewisMeriwether Lewis A former soldier and personal secretary to President Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis was chosen, with William Clark, to lead an overland expedition to the Pacific Ocean. They succeeded in reaching the Pacific and returning safely in a trip which lasted more than two years (1804-1806). Lewis was rewarded in 1806 with the governorship of Louisiana. In 1809, on his way to Washington, D.C., Lewis died under mysterious circumstances in Tennessee.. Died on October,11,1809.
