6. From the phases, map possible content/activities onto the ‘3 circles’ model. ‘Brainstorm’ new ideas – remember this is just the ideas stage – not everything will make it to the plan. Incorporate ideas from existing planning (if appropriate).

Steps to improving standards in writing Compare your class data to the age related expectations for the year group. Identify pupils who need to be accelerated to age related expectations. Identify their strengths as writers and which areas require further development. Then what?

8. Use the renewed Framework What are the areas of strength and areas for development for writers in your class in the following areas? Create and shape texts Text structure and organisation Sentence structure and punctuation

9. Renewed Framework Look at a strand in the Primary Framework. Discuss the expectations for children’s progress implicit in the learning objectives. Using the renewed Framework think about how you can incorporate working on each strand within a unit of work.

11. Benefits of Guided Writing: Enables teachers to tailor the teaching the needs of the pupils; Facilitates the teaching and learning of individual children. Although guided writing is a group activity focuses on the needs of the group, the teacher is able to observe and respond to the needs of the individuals within the group; Provides the teacher with the opportunity to extend and challenge the more able groups of children; encourages the children to be active participants in discussions about writing; Builds confidence – the group are all grappling with the same issues; Allows the teacher to give immediate feedback on success and the opportunity to discuss further areas for improvement.
