1 IRONY “Irony is an insult conveyed in the form of a compliment” Edwin P. Whipple

2 Verbal Irony  When someone says one thing but means the opposite  Example: “You look very nice today” Teacher to a student who has suddenly sprouted a blue mohawk.

3 Situational Irony  Describes an occurrence that is not just surprising; it is the opposite of what we expected.  EXAMPLE: Alannis Morisette: He won the lottery but died the next day. You meet the man of your dreams and then meet his beautiful wife

4 Dramatic Irony  Is the kind of irony that occurs when we know what is in store for a character but the character does not know.  Example:Romeo and Juliet We know that Juliet is not dead but Romeo doesn’t and kills himself. OFTEN USED IN HORROR MOVIES…
