Definitions of Poetry Poetry is a sword of lightning, ever unsheathed, which consumes the scabbard that would contain it. -Percy Bysshe Shelley A poem is an artistic representation of what it feels like to experience emotional life as a human being. -Linda Sue Grimes Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful. -Rita Dove If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry. -Emily Dickinson

Poetry Hoard When Vikings raided England and Ireland they always brought along a skald (poet). The skald’s job was to observe the battles and write songs and poems to commemorate the heroic deeds of the warriors. The Vikings valued these wordhords as much, if not more, than the treasure they looted. You will have your own wordhord. Save every poem you get in this class. At the end of the year, you will place all these poems into an anthology – creating your own Poetry Hoard.

Analysis of the Poem Watch as some beautiful people analyze the poem and make us all feel bad about ourselves – just like those people in the commercials that are always having a good time – laughing and hugging and sailing…Why do so many people in commercials sail? They’re always sailing! I hate them! I want to sail…Someone take me sailing…please… Analysis of the poem by the best students ever!

Song and Poem Together In a short written paragraph compare the song and the poem: What do the speakers of both the song and the poem desire? Do you see the poem and the song connected thematically? Share with your classmate.

Tone Write this down in your notebooks: Tone: the writer's attitude toward the material. Tone may be playful, formal, intimate, angry, serious, ironic, outraged, baffled, tender, serene, depressed, etc. Just about any adjective (a describing word) can be a tone. If you don’t understand the tone of a piece of writing, it becomes difficult to understand what the author is trying to say.

The Big Bang Theory One of the characters on the show, Sheldon, doesn’t understand when people are being sarcastic toward him. Because he can’t understand the tone – he often misinterprets the message. Let’s take a look: Sheldon & SarcasmSheldon & Sarcasm

Mood Write this down in your notebooks. The atmosphere or feeling created by a literary work, partly by a description of the objects or by the style of the descriptions. A work may contain a mood of horror, mystery, holiness, or childlike simplicity, to name a few, depending on the author's treatment of the work.
