Project Aims related to Monitoring and QA/QC Overall Aim To assess the quality and variety of air quality data collected across Scotland and evaluate its compatibility Technical Requirements To explore options for an automatic interrogation systems for collecting non-continuous air quality monitoring data from selected Scottish local authorities To provide QA and QC procedures for capturing and handling air quality data and advising local authorities and others on these issues
3
Presentation Overview Availability of Air Quality Data in Scotland Comparability of Air Quality Data in Scotland Automatic integration of sampler data QA/QC procedures – covered in March seminar
4
Non - automatic data The web based diffusion tube data collection system is up and running 19 Scottish LAs already use this system
5
UK Network Sites in Scotland NetworkAuto/ Sampler No. sites Automatic Urban and Rural (AURN)A14 Non Auto smoke/SO 2 and NO 2 Rural Acid Deposition and SO 2 S11 Automatic HydrocarbonA2 PAHS3 Heavy MetalsS3 Rural Metal DepositionS2 Non – Auto Benzene and ButadieneS2 AmmoniaS26 Nitric AcidS4
6
National Network Measurements Few Automatic Sites –14 sites Large number of pollutant species –4 inorganic gases (CO, NO 2, SO 2 and ozone) –Particles PM 10 and PM 2.5 (8 new Partisol Monitors for Scottish Executive) –26 organic compounds (including benzene and 1,3-butadiene) –34 PAH compounds –22 metallic species (both airborne and deposited) –ammonia and nitric acid and a number on anion and cation species in rainwater Some data only available in reports and network contractors databases
7
Automatic Sites in Scotland Data collected automatically by telemetry Proven technologies and procedures Highly reliable process
8
Local Authority Automatic Sites: Results of Scottish Executive Questionnaire in 2005 Situation as of March 2006- Situation as of March 2006- 32 Scottish Local Authorities 32 Scottish Local Authorities 8 no automatic monitoring 8 no automatic monitoring 19 LA automatic sites in 8 LAs 19 LA automatic sites in 8 LAs 150 NO 2 diffusion tubes – 150 NO 2 diffusion tubes – probably lots more probably lots more We will be contacting Local Authorities to update the data as part of the Database Project This was the situation in March 2006
9
LA Automatic Stations in Scotland How many ? 82Pollutant NO 2 SO 2 CO O3O3O3O3PM10TEOMPM10other No of sites 572018104917
10
LA Diffusion tube sites in Scotland How many ? 834Pollutant NO 2 Benzene 1,3- butadiene SO 2 (Indicative only) No of sites 8343574
11
Local Authority Data Large number of Monitoring Stations Focuses on Air Quality Strategy Pollutants How comparable are all these data?
12
How comparable are the data? 14 site are National Network 20 are Netcen Calibration Club All sites have likely been used for Review and Assessment However, for a comparable Scottish dataset, we recommend that a programme of harmonisation is required
13
Harmonisation of Scottish Air Quality Data Independent audit of every site –Check of analyser operation –Check of calibration gas standards Regular data checks Common site operational procedures in a “Site Operation Manual” and training Longer term data checking and adjustment (ratification)
14
PM episode 7 –12 May 2006
15
Additional Scottish Data for Episode Analysis
16
Summary Scottish Executive Database successfully developed With advanced web presence being finalised It includes both National and additional LA data There is still more LA data available, however There is a need for data to be harmonised throughout Scotland
