1
Eight key directions for science in CI
2
Biome coverage of our baseline biodiversity data Currently: largely terrestrial alone Direction: terrestrial + Global Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment + Global Marine Species Assessment
3
Focus of definition of targets for biodiversity conservation outcomes Currently: Species (‘Extinctions Avoided’) + Key Biodiversity Areas (‘Areas Protected’) Direction: Species (‘Extinctions Avoided’) + Key Biodiversity Areas (‘Areas Protected’) + Seascapes & Landscapes (‘Corridors Consolidated’)
4
Metrics for our biodiversity conservation Currently: outcomes supply (biodiversity conservation targets at species, site, and ‘scape’ levels) Direction: outcomes supply + benefits demand (climate change, ecosystem services, human well- being; science of changing human behavior)
5
Metrics for our science Currently: Proximate (scientific publications, presentations at conferences, etc) Direction: Proximate + Ultimate (how much does a publication, presentation etc contribute towards achieving our biodiversity conservation outcomes)
6
Metrics for our activities CI-wide Currently: in Centers for Biodiversity Conservation and Regional Programs, also in CFD Direction: Field + Headquarters divisions (CABS, CELB, CCG, Communications, Development)
7
Funding for biodiversity conservation science Currently: built within philanthropic conservation investments (esp. Moore Fdn) Direction: towards public funding, both multilaterals and development agencies for data as global public good; and academic funding (NSF etc)
8
Scientific partnerships and strategic capacity-building Currently: most science conducted internal to CI, partnerships ad hoc Direction: strategic capacity-building for conservation science – partner with academic departments, graduate students to multiply our work
9
Integration of science within CI Currently: much science in HQ and in the regional programs, but not enough connections Direction: science integrated throughout CI… how?
