7  “Advanced students seeking a challenge—and a pat on the back for going above and beyond— sometimes wonder whether they might be better off taking courses at a local college rather than their high school’s honors or AP courses. In most cases, they won’t be. AP culminates in a grade recognized nationwide, and the caliber of student at your local college may not be as high as in an advanced high school course. A college course is generally the better option only if a student is looking at specialized subject matter, such as a language like Russian or Japanese. If the subject is in the high school curriculum, the best bet is to take it there.” –What to do When for College by Edward B. Fiske & Bruce G. Hammond
