Personal Information Passwords Make it hard for others to figure out Never give it to your friends Don’t use the same one for all accounts If you write your passwords down Keep in a safe location How to secure your passwords (secure passwords)

Personal Information Personal information includes… Full name Address Phone numbers Email address Where you go to school Limit the amount of info you provide about yourself online Even after it is deleted, people can still find it Your “digital tattoo”

Social Networks Continued… When accepting “friends” online… Only become “friends” with people you know in real life Don’t allow anyone you are unfamiliar with to “friend/follow” you Be cautious – people online don’t always tell the truth about who they are What are some positive aspects of social networking sites?

Profiles of Potential Friends 10 groups; pass out envelopes Read the shared profile on outside of envelope Decide whether to accept this person as a “friend” Write down why you would or would not befriend this person (2 minutes – Timer)Timer Open the envelope to see if profile matches actual identity Raise hand if your person’s identity is different than the profile What are some of the differences you are seeing between the two?

Profiles of Potential Friends Summary People do not always tell the truth about who they are Anyone can ask to be your friend online Even if your profile is set to private Don’t accept a “friend” request from anyone you don’t know in real life! Don’t share personal information that Reveals your location How to contact you Make sure your friends don’t post revealing information about you

Posting Pictures & Videos Online Once you post something… It is on the Internet FOREVER Even after it is “deleted” it still can be found

Instant Messaging Chat only with people you know in real life Never give out personal information Don’t accept downloads/files from people Remember… only say what you’d say face-to-face There is a real person with real feelings on the other end of the IM

Online Gaming 154 million + play video games across America per year (2005) In 1 week, the average 6 th grade boy will play video games for 23 hours 6 th grade girl will play video games for 12 hours Like all other sites or applications, don’t give out personal information If someone starts to bully you, mute them immediately

Online Gaming In groups of 4 discuss the following questions & be prepared to share your answers What should you do if another gamer… Asks for your person information? Asks for your account password? Makes you feel uncomfortable? Offers you a deal that sounds too good to be true? Asks to meet you in person? Timer

In Summary… Don’t share personal information Set privacy settings to PRIVATE or FRIENDS ONLY Only be “friends” with people you know in real life Be cautious when posting pictures & videos They are there forever – Digital Tattoo Remember, when IM’ing Person on other end of the message Save inappropriate messages & tell a trusted adult Stand up for others or tell an adult if you see bullying
