Naming Acids

binary All binary acids are named this way: "hydro"  the prefix "hydro" is used.  the root of the anion is used. "ic"  the suffix "ic" is used. "acid"  the word "acid" is used as the second word in the name. hydroicacid  ex. HCl is hydrochloric acid.

Name these binary acids: HF HBr H 2 S

Many acids involve polyatomic acids. If you don’t know the polyatomic ions, you’re sunk.

"ite" "ous"  If "ite" is the suffix, change it to "ous" “acid  Add the word “acid”.  ex. ite  NO 2 -1 is nitrite ous acid  HNO 2 is nitrous acid

Name these acids: H 2 SO 3 H 3 PO 3

"ate" "ic“ If the ending is "ate", change it to "ic“ ex. ate ClO 3 -1 is chlorate icacid HClO 3 is chloric acid

Name these acids: H 2 C 2 O 4 H 2 SO 4 H 3 PO 4 HC 2 H 3 O 2 HMnO 4

Name the following acids: 1) H 2 CrO 4 2) H 2 CO 3 3) HI 4) HF

Write the formula for these acids: 1) hydrobromic acid 2) nitric acid 3) chloric acid 4) dichromic acid
