1 EARLY RELEASE DAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NOVEMBER 6, 2012

2 What’s New in Testing  First semester: Only Math I will be tested (Multiple Choice and Gridded Response)  Second Semester: All high school math courses except Transition to Math I and Calculus AB will have common exams (Geometry, Algebra II, Math II, AFM, Discrete Math, Precalculus). Tests will be multiple choice and open response.  Second Semester: Math I EOC

8 2 Revise other’s “good” lesson  Watch a second video: Distributive PropertyDistributive Property  Again, pay attention to any strategies or practice standards that would support Common Core instruction.  List anything you see which fosters student learning and understanding

9 3 Discuss ways to improve Discuss in small groups with all numbers present. What was good about the lesson as it was presented? How could it be improved to great?

11 5 Apply ways to improve lessons  Look at a lesson plan of your own or go to middle school lessons or high school lessons and choose a lesson plan.middle school lessonshigh school lessons  Use the lesson review form to assess the lesson’s compatibility with new standards.  List things that could be added to your plan that would take it from good to great!

12 Looking ahead  Review pacing guide. Check out the 70% rule of thumb. Seventy percent of the time needs to be spent on the “Major Work of the Grade”.  Pinpoint topics, skills and lessons to be taught in the next month  Discuss and list ways to move from good to great Common Core/Essential Standards lessons.
