Advertising Campaign project in MS Project  Open MS Project, Select View-> Gantt which should be the default  Enter task names  Enter durations  Enter precedence relationships, view network  View critical activities: Project>Filtered for:critical  Suppose we assign the above tasks to different people: Ali and Veli (Tools>Assign Resources)  View>Resource Graph  Level resources to alleviate conflict  Track project progress

Resource Allocation in Project Management  So far: CPM/PERT methods for scheduling  Ignored resource constraints  In reality, each task requires at least one resource, resources are mostly shared  Resource allocation is assignment of resources to scheduled tasks –Scheduleds may have to be changed to accommodate resource issues

Resource Loading  The amount of load on each resource (summation over all tasks which need that resource) on a period-by-period basis  Good tool in early scheduling  A seperate histogram for each resource is developed

Resource Leveling Objectives:  Minimize the period-by-period variations in resource loading by shifting tasks within their slack allowances  Minimize over-usage of resources  Create a smoother distribution of resource usage –Reduced set-up costs (hiring, training, laying off) –Improves morale –Needs less hands-on managemet

Different Approaches possible  If time constraint is the priority, no adjustments should be made on the critical path  If resource constraint is the priority, project duration can be extended by adjusting critical activities  Earliest and Lates Start Times and Slack information is used in Resource Leveling  MS Project facilitates resource leveling
