2.  Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 allows women in the United States to vote.  This causes women to yearn for more rights and equality and throw away many inhibitions  The arrival of new trends and styles: make-up, shorter skirts, cropped hair, “flapper” styles.

4.  New advancements in technology included: automobiles, broader radio communication, products for the home (refrigerator, vacuum, iron)=all lead to more consumerism.  Albert Einstein introduces theories of relativity and Sigmund Freud revolutionizes people’s ideas of how the human body works.

7.  Many writers including T.S. Eliot, Franz Kafka, Virginia Woolf, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and James Joyce.  Pablo Picasso created a new form of abstract art known as cubism. This caused an uproar in art and also lead to surrealism and style revolutionized by Salvador Dali.

11.  European composers transform the classical form.  Sergey Prokofiev and Arnold Schoenberg both revolutionize the composition of modern music.  Meanwhile, in the United States the “golden age of jazz” is occurring. Artists such as Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, and later Duke Ellington are leaders in this area of the arts.
