HISTORY
10
The origin of Catalonia is “la Marca Hispànica”, a territory made by Charlemagne to save himself from the Muslims. In the Xth century it became independent from the French King Charlemagne.
11
Catalonia joined Aragó and made an empire by the Mediterranean sea in the XIVth and XVth centuries.
12
In 1479 the king of Aragó married the queen of Castella. This is the “origin of Spain” but Catalonia kept its institutions, language and culture. From 1500 to 1700 the Habsburg’s dynasty reigned in Spain. Then, Catalonia lost the territories in the North-Pyrenees.
13
In 1700, King Habsburg died without descendants. Catalonia preferred the Habsburg’s dynasty because they respected the Catalan rights, but the Borbon’s dynasty won. The defeat was on 11 th September 1714, and this date is the national holiday of Catalonia. We celebrate we won’t give up, and we’ll overcome difficulties.
14
The Borbon’s dynasty has reigned until today. Exception: XX century II Republic (arisement of Catalonia) Coup Civil war (1936 – 39) Franco’s dictatorship (1939 – 75) Franco abolished the Catalan institutions and chased the Catalan and their culture.
15
With Franco’s death, Spain became a democracy and Catalonia, its culture, language and institutions were respected. WE ARE A NATION

CULTURE AND TRADITIONS
17
‘’Els Castellers’’ This tradition consists in the raising of human towers. The people who climb up the tower are called ‘’castellers’. A child climbs until the top of the tower, and raises the hand and then goes down. At the bottom of the tower there are a lot of people holding it. It has been considered humanity’s heritage.
19
‘’La sardana’’ ‘’La sardana’’ is the most important dance in Catalonia. The dancers take the hands of their partners and they make a circle. They follow the rhythm of the music.
20
Sant Jordi is the patron saint of Catalonia and it is held on 23 rd April. The boys give roses to the girls and they receive books from the girls. It’s like Saint Valentine’s day. ‘’Sant Jordi’’
21
‘’Sant Joan’’ It’s held on 24th June. But in Catalonia we celebrate it the night before, organising big parties to start the summer, lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks. It’s the shortest night of the year. The tradition is to eat Saint John’s cake and drink a toast with cava.
22
“Els diables” Els diables, the devils in English, is a pagan tradition where people dress up as a devil and dance to the music of drums while setting off fireworks.
