The other is for papers that need to be returned. Please put any notes or papers for me in the folder. I check them every morning. When sending any money to school, please put it in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on it and where the money needs to go.

School to Home Communication I will periodically be emailing you with updates on what we are learning, upcoming events, and other special things going on in first grade. There is a calendar section on my web backpack that has important dates as well.

Homework Homework is meant to help reinforce the skills your child is learning in school. Homework is sent home each Friday and is due back the next Friday. In addition to the homework, first grade students should be reading at home as often as possible, practicing sight words, spelling words, and math facts. Spelling City and Xtra Math are two websites that we use to practice spelling and math facts. More info will be coming home about those sites and login information. The first homework packet will go home Sept. 4th
8
Spelling Spelling words are sent home each Friday on the homework. They are the words for the following week. Spelling Tests are each Friday.

Sight Words Sight words for the week are sent home on Fridays on the homework. These are the words we like the students to be able to read by sight. Two of them will be on the spelling test. Sight words will be assessed at the end of each unit, which is every six weeks.

Positive Classroom Behavior Students can earn red tickets for displaying good behavior and following the school rules of being respectful, responsible, and safe. They can put their tickets in a drawing each week to go to the prize box or can save up ten to go to extra PE. As a class, if we get ten compliments (fish in our bowl) we get to choose a reward as a class.
15
Birthdays Please let me know if you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday with our class. I allow small individual treats to be brought in. No cakes or cookie cakes that need to be cut. Please make sure you have all utensils necessary for the treats. We celebrate birthdays in the afternoon. We have 21 students in our class. First Grade is a nut free zone!!!!! It is a school policy that no birthday invitations may be distributed at school unless all children in the class are invited. Also, please do not have students bring birthday gifts for others.
16
Absence If your child will be absent, please let the office know. When your child returns, I make every effort to get them caught up on their work here at school. However, work may be sent home for them to complete and return within three days. Please let me know if your child will be gone for a long period of time. For example, a vacation or illness.

Parent Volunteers Parent volunteers may come from about 10:40 to 11:40 to help with our classroom. We eat lunch at 11:40, so this allows you to eat lunch with your child if you wish. There is a parent helper cubby where you will find instructions on what to do for that day. There are desks out in the hall where you will work. Please try to limit the distractions to the class when calling students out to work. I will post a parent volunteer calendar on my web backpack for each month.
18
Estimation Jar Each student will have a week where they fill our estimation jar. There is a schedule on my web backpack that shows each students’ week. The jar will be sent home with the student the Friday before their week and should be brought back the Monday of their week. Please make sure there are at least 21 items in the jar. No more than 100. Items must be peanut free.
