2 Session Description This session is ideal for any and all “first-timers” as well as those who need a refresher on the college search and application process overall. Topics include an overview of services provided by the Guidance & Counseling office and staff; a parent’s role and family dynamics throughout the process; and the all-important visit to college campuses. Attend this session if you have thought, “Okay, my child is a junior... NOW WHAT!?”

3 SERVICES: Office of Guidance & Counseling Counseling related to the college search process Facilitating discussion between family and student on goodness of fit for both Advisement on admissions Resources for college admissions testing Educate students on the college application process Processing applications Writing recommendations Advising teachers on recommendations Assisting students with writing college application essays Resources for financial aid

4 ME, ME, ME! I’m the parent! I want to be involved! SUPPORT student in college application/search process LISTEN, with an open heart and mind. LISTEN AGAIN. AND AGAIN. Attend College 101 meeting with counselor and student Be proactive: ask questions! Attend local college fairs with your student Remember that your child’s counselor has his/her best interest in mind Engage student in active process of research on colleges, careers, and majors Engage student in discussion of college options, pros and cons Engage student in discussion of financial aid as necessary Research financial aid options with assistance from counselor as necessary Assist student with college applications if requested Follow-up with student to determine he/she is fulfilling roles listed above Read monthly newsletters Visit colleges of interest with student Complete brag sheet (parent)

5 The College Visit The importance of a “gut feeling” - give yourselves enough time to get a feel for the campus: take an official tour, sit in on a class. Overnight stays can be eye-opening! Before you go: do your homework Some must-see’s: the library, academic facilities, housing, dining halls, students, facilities for student recreation Ask the right questions: student life, faculty, academics, career/graduate school advisement, housing, safety, food & meal plans “If you could change one thing, what would it be?” Discuss financial aid options, if applicable Ask about the admissions process
