Image Processing Laboratories for Grades 6-8 Deona Johnson Christen Scott Vanessa Shurn Advisor: Dr. Cindy Klevickis Sponsor: Dr. Bob Kolvoord

Project Description The purpose of this project is to incorporate interactive learning into middle school math and science lessons. This is done by using image processing software. The laboratories developed in this thesis reinforce the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Overview of the Project Targeted towards middle school students in grades 6-8. Reinforce the Virginia Standards of Learning. Uses free downloadable software. –Scion Image Processing Software (PCs) –NIH Image Processing Software (MACs)

The Game Plan Determined the laboratory topics Located and created the images –Internet –JMU Department of Geographical Information Systems –We took the pictures Designed the laboratory exercises Tested each laboratory Created a web page

Laboratories Topics Barcodes –examine how the density of bar codes varies in order to demonstrate how scanners identify the differences in bar codes. –how barcodes work. –use of binary math to interpret them. E. coli Growth –looks at the exponential growth of E.coli bacteria.

Laboratories Topics Topography –examines how topography affects water flow and land use. Plume –shows how pollution from a contaminated well spreads due to groundwater flow.

Testing Barcodes Taken as Middle School Teachers tested out the “Decoding Barcodes” Lab –Our Learning Experience

Quick Tutorial on Scion Image Used to display, edit, analyze, and animate images. Images must be in one of the following formats. –TIFF –BMP –PICT Image formats can be changed to fit these standards by using Microsoft Photo Editor or Adobe PhotoShop.

Common Image Processing Tools Magnifying Glass –allows you to magnify image. Selection Tools –allows you to select a portion of the image for further analyzing. Polygonal Oval Line Freehand

Common Image Processing Tools Eyedropper –allows you to pick a color from the image and change the color of the paint brush, pencil, or spray can. Drawing Tools –allows you to draw different shapes. Text Tool –allows you to insert text onto the image.

Common Image Processing Analyzing Options Density Profile –used to determine color density. Measure –can measure various variables. length area perimeter

Web Page We created a web page to make the laboratories more accessible and provide additional information about the laboratory topics. http://www.isat.jmu.edu/users/klevicca/Image

Learn for Yourself Hands-on experience with an image processing laboratory Scion Image Software Laboratory handouts “Making Topography Come Alive!”
