3. Course Objectives The goal of this class is to help students attain an acceptable degree of proficiency in the four basic skills of listening, speaking reading and writing. Students also will gain an appreciation of other cultures.

4. Grading Guidelines Major grades: 60 % Unit Tests Lesson Test Oral presentation Projects Minor grades: 30% Grammar/vocabulary quizzes Speaking/listening Class Participation Homework: 10%

5. Grading Procedures Extra credit assignments are not used. Homework and minor-grade assignments will be accepted a maximum of one day late, for a maximum grade of 70. Late projects (for major grades) will be accepted up to three days late with a 10-point grade reduction for each day late. If a student does not turn in an assignment at all within the specified time period (due date plus specified late-work period), a zero is recorded and that assignment cannot be made up for credit. However, if the work is turned in but is either (1) incorrect to the point that it receives a failing grade or (2) receives a failing grade due to a combination of incorrect answers and late work penalties, the student shall be permitted an opportunity to redo the assignment. Timetable: The student will have an opportunity within 5 days (major) or 2 days (minor) to redo the assignment, to complete an alternative assignment or assessment, or to provide other evidence of remediation. (The method of remediation is at the teacher’s discretion.) Calculation of grade: The maximum grade a student can receive on a redone assignment or new assignment is 70. If a student scores below a 70 on the redone or new assignment, the higher of the two grades on the assignment will be taken. Activities that demonstrate mastery: Acceptable activities that demonstrate mastery include but are not limited to: alternative types of assessment, assessment corrections, and evidence of remediation. At the teacher’s discretion, if the class earns more than the required number of minor or major grades per six weeks, a grade or grades may be dropped in that category. The same assignment must be dropped for the entire class.

7. How to succeed in a language classroom Everyday attendance is essential in a foreign language classroom. Study and review materials. Twenty minutes is plenty if you are consistent. Do your assignments on time. Ask questions. If students knows that a particular subject is difficult find help immediately. Come to tutorials. Have a positive attitude.
