1. How Operating Systems Work Operating System Functions At the simplest level, an operating system does two things: It manages the hardware and software resources of the system. In a desktop computer, these resources include such things as the processor, memory, disk space and more (On a cell phone, they include the keypad, the screen, the address book, the phone dialer, the battery and the network connection). It provides a stable, consistent way for applications to deal with the hardware without having to know all the details of the hardware.

2. List 4 different kinds of Operating Systems. Real-time operating system (RTOS) - any dedicated machine – alarms Single-user, single task – Blackberry (changing to multi- tasking, single user) Single-user, multi-tasking - Windows XP Multi-user - Unix

3. Name 5 different types of Operating Systems. Windows XP, Windows 98 - used on PC System 5, System 6, System 7 - used on MAC PC MAC OS 7, MAC OS 8, MAC OS 9 - use on Mac PC Server operating systems - Linux, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Novell 5.1, Citrix, OS/2 Mainframe operating Systems - Unix, DOS, Linux, IBM - z/OS, z/VSE, z/TPF, z/VM,z/OSz/VSEz/TPFz/VM

organize and manage files – copy, move, delete, rename files, create shortcuts, set up directories in a tree structure save copies of files in different places – especially photos and videos general keyboard shortcuts – ctrl c (copy), ctrl v(paste), ctrl x (cut), print and printscreen 4. Describe 3 or 4 different File Management techniques.

Assess User Computing Needs and select appropriate hardware and software for different situations Student on fixed budget – portability – laptop or put in one place a desktop Home business user – desktop, printer, internet – software that allows you to do business Gaming enthusiast – need high end graphic card, high end sound card, lots of RAM memory and high end processor – higher priced desktop – extra fans An accountant – computer runs different accounting software, probably portable – laptop Computer programmer – computer able to run IDE packages like netbeans, Eclipse – good processing speed and more RAM
