Amendments VI – In criminal cases, right to a speedy trial; informed of charges, confront witnesses, call witnesses, right to attorney. VII – In civil cases, at value over $20, right to trial by jury; facts about the case are decided by the jury and cannot be changed.

VIII – Excessive bail, fines, cruel or unusual punishment cannot be inflicted IX – The rights listed in the Constitution cannot be construed to deny other rights retained by the people. X – Powers not delegated in the Constitution are reserved to the states and people Amendments

What are civil rights? Amendments … personal, natural rights of individuals What is due process? … having established jurisdiction over defendant, given proper notice, and proper hearing, requires the law to provide fairness in applying just laws
