America…America…This is You** James Madison and Henry Clay looked to promote the American System to help America grow without foreign markets and included: Protective Tariffs to encourage American goods Establish a national bank to promote a single currency and trade Improve transportation to help make trade easier and improve the economy

Reunited and it feels so good A National Road began to be established to link the nation together for transportation Canal Systems were also established to help link the nation’s waterways to promote trade The Erie Canal was created to link the Ohio river valley to the great lakes and increased New York Cities Population Steam Engines on trains also led to an increase in the rail systems which increased to 9000 miles of rail by the 1850s

Full Court Press As nationalism grew in the United States grew, James Monroe became president eliminating the Federalist Party During the Era of Good Feelings, the federal government became stronger including the supreme court decision McColloch v. Maryland (1819) and Gibbons v. Ogden (1824) McColloch v. Maryland said states could not Tax national Banks Gibbons v. Ogden brought interstate commerce under the control of the National Government

Movin’ on Up Nationalism led to expanding boundaries in the United States eliminating naval presence in the great lakes and setting the Canadian border at the 49 th parallel As relations with Britain improved Spain became a problem in southern Florida Andrew Jackson invaded Florida to defeat the Seminoles and claimed Florida for the United States After the Invasion Spain turned over control of Florida to the United States and Also gave up their Claims in Oregon

LONG Division As nationalism brought the country together, sectionalism was driving it apart Different economies in the South, the North, and West led to disagreements on national policy Sectionalism became an issue as Missouri threatened to disturb the slave/nonslave state balance

America loves Compromises Both the north and the south worried that Missouri could Lead to a anti or pro slavery majority in congress Henry Clay announced the Missouri Compromise allowing Maine as a Free State and Missouri as a Slave State The compromise also set a border in the Louisiana territory at the 36 th parallel so separate slave and free states The compromise was seen as a success, but Thomas Jefferson believed the compromise foretold the onset of a divided nation

Monroe Doctrine….He must work at the Minute Clinic or something The United States began to see foreign presence in Latin America as a future problem in the United States The Russian Presence in the west also worried the United States To solve both problems James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine which outlawed future colonization in the Americas It also pledged the United States would stay out of European Problems as long as they stayed out of America The Monroe Doctrine made the United States a world Power and Protector in the Americas
