Q4: Who would be the audience for your media product?
2
Thrillers generally attract a very broad audience, a wide range of ages and both males and females; this is why they are so successful. The target audience for our film would probably be a little narrower however because of the themes; domestic interest and mental health issues which are usually considered more feminine and may not be particularly appealing to a young audience who have little experience in these areas. Therefore I think females in their mid 20’s- late 40’s would most likely be my target audience. Also, as it would be an independent film with no famous stars or directors to attract the audience, the target market would be much more niche meaning the film would have fairly low box office ratings.

This is Melicia Miller. She is 37 years old and lives in Brighton. She usually dresses casually; jeans and a top. She enjoys going out for coffee with her friends and shopping though she tries to buy what she can from local, independent shops rather than paying for corporate brands. She enjoys films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Leon, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Pulp Fiction which she watches at her local Independent picture house: Duke of York’s before buying them on DVD to watch with her friends and family. On TV she enjoys watching documentaries on channel 4 as well as comedy on Dave such as QI. The type of music Melicia would normally listen to is Indie pop such as The XX, Vampire Weekend and Mumford and Sons which she will support at local gigs and festivals. I think our film will appeal to this girl as she is a great believer in independent companies and generally likes films that are fast paced or dramatic.

Q5: How did you attract you audience?
6
Marketing tools Since the age range for my target audience is wide, different forms of media will need to be used to interact with them. Younger audiences of around 18- 30 will be more responsive to pull advertising which includes viral campaigns e.g putting an advert for The Latent Mind on Facebook whereas the older half of the audience will need to be addressed using push media such as asking stars to appear on chat shows like Jonathon Ross or advertising on billboards or in newspapers. As the film wouldn’t be expecting a large reception because it is an independent production, the events used to promote it would be small-scale such as guest appearances on local radio and premiering at independent film festivals such as London Independent Film Festival. As the film is an independent production there are no famous actors or directors to lure the audience so the USP of the film has to be relied on to attract the audience. The unique selling points could be an award for best newcomer

Within our class we gained feedback after everyone had watched our opening title sequence and found that most people really liked the use of props to hint at the upcoming narrative: “the ring works really well, clearly a possible plot device” Another aspect of the OTS that was picked up on was the use of sound to create a build up of tension: “SFX were really good because it really makes you think something might happen to her” I also posted the OTS on Facebook in order to gain feedback Audience feedback

Overall Overall the feedback we received both in class and on social networking sites, has been positive and people especially like our use of props and sound to aid the story and build suspense which is typical of the Thriller genre. Things that have been suggested as areas to work on are the focus and exposure however most people have said the opening title sequence worked well in gaining the audiences attention and the mise-en-scene compliments the plot really well e.g. the setting is appropriate to the housewife role.
