2.  Horace Mann: Was the one that created the idea of public Education.  Thomas Jefferson He made it so that black people were allowed to attend school, but they were also not treated fairly.  John Dewey: John Dewey was a heavy influence with schools on international education.  New England Teachers “Ten years ago, I was called to superintendent a district…in Connecticut.”  Philadelphia Working Men They believed that the children were able to study and earn money at the same time

3.  In 1775 the goal for education was to teach children subjects to secure, develop and live in the new frontier.  In the 1800’s, they wanted public schools because most families could not afford private schools.  In the 1800’s, they wanted a school for African Americans.  In the 1800’s, they got a school for the Africans Americans

4.  In 1827 all towns in the U.S.A. with 500 or more people had to have a public High School.  You would get a number of lashes for the bad things you did at school  Roberts v. city of Boston declared that schools would be separate (racially) but supposedly equal

5.  In 1825, the first All Girls High School opened  In1817, the first School of Law opened  In 1840, Carter established the first teaching school for teachers  The public kept the schools running. The farmers had helped by supplying wood for the new school and also by supplying fuel for the new schools as well.  The schools in the 1800’s attempted to find students from a broad range of ages and a lot of skill levels
