2. Molly Charlie of Toksook Bay has been hired as the Village Coordinator for the Special IGAP. She has been interviewing Elders for the past three months concerning environmental issues and is still in progress to write up more about Elder Wisdom. The Special IGAP has been utilizing Elder Wisdom since the program started. Here is a passage from Molly Charlie’s interview with Theresa Charlie. Molly Charlie, “ In the past, how were you taught to take care of our land?” Theresa Charlie, “Our parents use to teach us the way of not spoiling/defiling ourselves. Not make anything a potential trash. Don’t put food anywhere it’s not supposed to be. Don’t put anything that could spoil anywhere. They use to tell us that anything made into trash it would spoil.” Molly, “Why did they use to tell you that?” Theresa, “Anything that is spoiled and is consumed might get us sick. Some food that was spoiled can cause one to have diarrhea or stomach sickness.”

3. Newtok Special IGAP Village Representative Margaret Nickerson Margaret Nickerson of Newtok, Alaska has been hired as the Village Rep for the Special IGAP. Margaret’s project has been working on banning Styrofoam products that the local schools have been utilizing for the past years (See Attachment). She also made news on the Delta Discovery about the hazardous and risks of using Styrofoam products. Margaret also received information from Senator Murkowski’s office. 4. Chefornak IGAP Demonstration Project The Native Village of Chefornak, held a Green Up Clean Up as their demonstration project thanks to the Nelson Island Consortia. Kids ranging from all ages (estimate ages 07-17 yrs. old) were involved with the project. We held a picnic for both days after the cleaning. The Chefarnrmute, Inc donated goods and refreshments for the kids and we would like to thank them for their support. We would also like to thank Alpar Clean Up Bags for donating 4 boxes of clean up bags. In age category, we gave out four bicycles to the top four kids that had picked up the most trash. They are donating three bicycles and picnic materials. When the clean up is done, we are planning to hold a picnic for the kids thanking them for the job well done. We would also like to thank the local clinic for their donation for the rubber gloves and a hand sensitizer to wash their hands after the day is over. And last, we would like to thank the Coastal Village Corporation for their donation of 1,000 dollars. 17. These are before and after pictures of Newtok. The village looks very clean after the demonstration project was done. Volunteers picked up trash bags along the river bank. It looks a lot better from before. A lot of trash gone on high ground as 1 to 2 miles.

19. Elder Wisdom Christine Patrick a resident of Newtok attended the Special IGAP meeting and gave helpful suggestions towards keeping our environment clean. Paul Carl, of Newtok has been telling stories of the past and has been telling people how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “To this day, people are not quite the same at how we were back then, they never worried about how much money they had, but they helped the people on the community that wanted help. Now a days, everything we need, money has to be given. Even to clean our environment.” Paul Carl

20. Elder Wisdom William Andy (left) and Michael John of Newtok also spoke during the Special IGAP meeting that was held in Newtok. The Special IGAP had decided to utilize the Elder’s inputs on how to keep the environment clean. “If you are not going to use what you catch? Leave it alone.” ~William Andy~ We were careful with subsistence food, never threw away edible food tundra or land our food back then were limited. We respected what we catch We mad sure that we shared over other surrounding villages with the game that we hunted for. Younger adults were told to abide by what elders used to tell them. To continue on living respecting the land, gather, and environment.

21. Tami Fordham, EPA Tribal Coordinator, attended the Newtok Special IGAP meeting and gave helpful information for the Nelson Island Consortia. Steve Sumida, of AITC Traditional Justice came out to Newtok and spoke about our traditional values. “Respect culture, respect environment bring on more elders and the community to meetings to discuss about culture and environment.” ~Steve Sumida~ Guest Speakers

22. Lynn Zender of Zender Environmental and Joe Sarcone of EPA, Solid Waste. Simone Sebalo of Zender Environmental, has been helping the consortia with helpful suggestions and inputs.

23. Fish Camps The Nelson Island Consortia has been discussing about cleaning up the campsites that are being utilized by subsistence fisherman and gatherers. The aerial pictures that we have taken after the Newtok Special IGAP Meeting are pictures of Qinaruq and the fish camps in there. (See following pictures.)
