More practice

A Debbie went shopping with her mother last Saturday afternoon. Listen to her story and give short answers to the questions below. 1. What do Debbie and her mother usually do on Saturday afternoon? 2. What did the message on the black T-shirts say? 3. What did they find in the shop? They do the family shopping. Don’t shop! Nothing but empty shelves.

4 What did the people in the black T-shirts want others to do? _________________________. 5 Do you think Debbie’s mum will consider their idea? ______________. Stop shopping for a day. Yes.

B1 read the article and then work in pairs. S1 asks the questions and S2 gives the answers. 1. S1 What do the bankers teach students on the 26th of April? To teach students how to handle their money.

2. S1 According to the bankers, what is the key to a better life? 3. S1 What spending habits do most American children have? Education and money management skills are the key to a better life. They do not have any saving and they spend money as fast as they can.

4. S1 Bankers teach students three things. What are they? Bankers teach students how to make smart decisions about money, how to balance their expenses against their income and how to invest and save money.

5. What does “ A penny saved is a penny earned.” mean? If you save money today, you will have more to spend later.

B2 Here are some of the tips and skills that the bankers shared with the students. Discuss them in groups of four and make sure you understand all the points. Then discuss your own spending habits.

Useful expressions Do you get pocket money from your parents? How do you spend your money? Do you save? How do you save your money? What will you do with your savings?

Do you invest your money? Do you agree that we should learn to save money when we are young? Why? How much do you think we should save for each yuan we have?

B3 Based on your answers to the questions in B2, write a paragraph about your own spending habits and see if you can do better in the future. I get about 200 yuan each month as pocket money. I used to spend most of it in a few days, on magazines and sweets. But I realized that I was wasting money, so I decided to start saving. When I get my pocket money on the first day of each month, I go straight to the bank and put half of it in my account. I keep the rest at home and I usually spend it having fun with my friends.

B3 Based on your answers to the questions in B2, write a paragraph about your own spending habits and see if you can do better in the future. If I have any money left at the end of the month I put it in my piggy bank. It is already getting quite heavy! I am not sure what I will do with my saving in the future, though. I need to make a clear plan, and use it for something important.
