CHAMPS for May 12, 2014 C – Conversation – No Talking – Take notes H – Help – RAISE HAND for questions A – Activity – Cornell Notes: Acids & Bases M – Materials and Movement – Pen/Pencil, Chem Notebook P – Participation – Complete your notes S – Success – Write three questions and summary about notes.

pH Scale

Topic: Acids and Bases Date: 5/12/14  An ACID is a compound that produces hydronium ions (H 3 O + ) when dissolved in water  Sour taste in foods (lemons)  React with metals to produce hydrogen gas  Change blue litmus paper to red  Can be very corrosive, destroying metals and burning skin  Think about when we placed Mg metal into Hydrochloric Acid What is an Acid? What are properties of Acids?

Topic: Acids and Bases Date: 5/12/14  When hydrochloric acid (HCl) dissolves in water it ionizes and splits into hydrogen (H + ) and chlorine (Cl - ) ions.  Hydrogen ions are attracted to the negative oxygen end of water molecule and combine to form hydronium ions How are hydronium ions formed?

Topic: Acids and Bases Date: 5/12/14  A BASE is a compound that produces hydroxide ions (OH - ) when dissolves in water  Bitter taste  Slippery feel (like soap)  Change red litmus paper to blue  Can be very caustic, destroying metals and burning skin What is a Base? What are properties of Bases?

Topic: Acids and Bases Date: 5/12/14  Sodium hydroxide dissociates in water to form sodium (Na + ) and hydroxide (OH - )  Ammonia is a base because it accepts a hydrogen atom when dissolves in water, leaving a OH - ion How are hydroxide ions formed?

Topic: Acids and Bases Date: 5/12/14  The strength and weakness of acids and bases is measured by a PH scale  This scale ranges from 0-14 and describe the acidity of a solution  pH stands for “power of hydrogen”  pH measures the concentration of hydronium ions in a solution How do we measure acids and bases?

Topic: Acids and Bases Date: 5/12/14  7 is neutral (water)  Numbers lower than 7 are ACIDIC (0-7)  Numbers higher than 7 are Basic (7-14)  Mixing Acids and Bases can neutralize them What do the numbers on a pH scale mean?

Reflection Acid / Base Strength: The pH Scale Using the diagram, answer the following: The lower the pH the more “__________”. The higher the pH the more “__________”.

PRACTICE PROBLEMS: Label each of the following as either: ACIDIC, BASIC, OR NEUTRAL. 1. Human blood - pH of 7.4.  Note: (If pH of Human blood falls below 7.35, can affect your central nervous system and lead to a coma). 2. Human saliva - Normal results should be between 6.5 and 6.8. 3. Human urine - pH range is 6.0 - 6.5 in the morning and between 6.5 - 7.0 later in the day.  (Note: Bacteria usually increase the pH, as they break down urea in the urine into ammonia). 4. Human milk - pH range is between 7.0 to 7.4. What do you know about your body? Which is Acidic and Basic?
