1 Invitation to Join the TPC Kim Shanley Chief Operating Officer TPC

2 What is the TPC?  A non-profit consortium whose mission is to define industry-standard benchmarks for the database and transaction processing industries.  More than 40 members worldwide over the last 10 years, including most of the largest computer system and database companies.

3 What Are the TPC Benchmarks?  TPC-C, OLTP Benchmark  TPC-H, Ad-Hoc Decision Support Benchmark  TPC-R, Business Reporting Decision Support Benchmark  Coming: TPC-W, E-Commerce Web Benchmark

4 TPC-C  Become the de facto standard for OLTP performance since its introduction in July, 1992.  Moderately complex OLTP.  Application models a wholesale supplier managing orders.  Order-entry provides a conceptual model for the benchmark; underlying components are typical of any OLTP system.  Workload consists of five transaction types.  Metrics are new-order transaction rate (tpmC) and price/performance ($/tpmC).

5 TPC-H  Became a benchmark in April 1999 when TPC-D was split into two benchmarks.  Models an ad-hoc decision support environment in which users don’t know the queries in advance and the execution times can be very long.  Workload consists of 22 complex read-only queries and 2 update transactions.  Workload measures the performance of a single power user and multiple concurrent users.  Metrics combine the single user power rating and multi- stream rating into single metric: (QphH) and price/performance ($/QphH).

6 TPC-R  Became a benchmark in April 1999 when TPC-D was split into two benchmarks.  Models an environment in which users do know the queries in advance.  Workload consists of same set of transaction as in TPC-H (22 complex read-only queries and 2 update transactions).  Workload measures the performance of a single power user and multiple concurrent users.  Metrics combine the single user power rating and multi- stream rating into single metric: (QphR) and price/performance ($/QphR).

7 TPC-W  Scheduled to become a TPC benchmark in 2000.  TPC-W represents Internet and Intranet E-Commerce environments.  Measures a large number of users browsing and ordering on- line.  Primary metrics will be Web Interactions Per Second (WIPS) and price/performance ($/WIPS).  TPC-W opens the door to many new players and new technologies!
