Spaghaper Design Project THE REPLACEMENTS THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2007 GROUP MEMBERS: Asia Johnson Elder Delaine TerMarKcus Smoot Joseph Childers

Problem Statement Every team will build a “spaghaper bridge” that must span a gap length of 20- inches. Maximum allowable width and height of the device is 5- inches by 5- inches respectively. A flat 2- inch section spanning the width of the device must be accounted for in order to place the bar of the testing apparatus. Extensions of the bridge outward to hold the bridge on the testing device are required but may not exceed 5- inches on each side in addendum to the required 20 inches of the main device, giving a total length of 30- inches. Extensions of the bridge on the end of the 20- inch section downward not exceeding 5- inches are allowed for support. Extensions not exceed 45 degrees from the top of the devices are also allowed.

Background Considered a brilliant feat of 19th-century engineering, the Brooklyn Bridge was a bridge of many firsts. It was the first suspension bridge to use steel for its cable wire. It was the first bridge to use explosives in a dangerous underwater device called a caisson. At the time it was built, the 3,460-foot Brooklyn Bridge was also crowned the longest suspension bridge in the world.

Proposed Design Our team’s features have angles on the truce to provide stable connections to the bridge. The truce is constructed by braces and is underneath the bridge to aid in preventing the bridge from falling in and to also aid in outside support for better stability, supporting the weight of the objects crossing the bridge. In the middle of each truce is an x-like shaped figure the assist in the extra strength provided by the bridge. The braces each consist of a 45 degree angle, connecting one brace to another. The base of the bridge is thicker to support more weight because all objects put weight on the base, which is assisted by the truce.

Experimental Procedures The teacher handed out materials that we needed for the project. We drew out a planned sketch on how we wanted to do our bridge. Each person was assigned a certain area to do on the project. The team began to work on building the ‘Spaghaper Bridge”.

Safety Appendix Safety is very important when conducting this experiment and testing it. During this experiment it is important to follow all safety rules. Some safety rules are as follow: Handle scissors very carefully. When sharing scissors point handles of the scissors toward the receiver while holding the other end. Do not play with glue or spread over wide areas that are not being used in the experiment. Raw spaghetti is very fragile and be careful when eating it. Do not wrap your or anyone else’s face with paper. While testing the experiment it is important to follow all safety rules. Some safety rules are as follows: When pouring items in the container to test it, always wear safety goggles. Where gloves when using objects that is not very safe when using hands.
