Lesson Title: “How do Historians divide time?” Learning Objectives: 1) To be able to understand time lines. 2) To be able to construct our own timeline. Starter Activity: Copy the thought shower into your books. Think with your partner and add as many reasons as you can as to why studying history is important! Why is studying History important? What is a timeline? How is it useful? Timelines help us understand history. They also tell us what happened when and how much time went by between events. Below is an example of a timeline for British History Year 0 (Christ is born ) Before Christ After Christ (AD) 1066 NORMANS 1485 TUDORS 100 AD 100 BC

In your books: 1)Explain what a timeline is 2)Draw a lime line 3)Explain on your timeline what BC and AD is 4) Add the dates below on the time- line BC: Before Christ was born AD: After Christ was born. Dates to put on your timeline: 1066 AD- Normans 42 AD- Romans 1603 AD- Stuarts 1325 BC –Egyptians 1837 AD- Victorians 480 BC- Greek Spartans alive

What is a century? A century is a period of 100 years. If we are talking about the period we live in today the date is 2010. We are in the 21 st Century. If you want to group a series of years together you call them a century. What ever the number of years is you count one after it to call it a century: Date/Year: 2010 Century: 21 st Date/Year: 1750 Century: 18 th Date/Year: 150 Century: 1 st Date/Year: 1900 Century: 20 th Activity: On your time line add for each year the century they belong to.

Lets create our own timeline! Draw another timeline into your book. Add important dates from your life on it. 1984 Miss Bidwell was born! 1989 Miss Bidwell starts school! Miss Bidwell finishes school! 2006 This is an example of what you could do: Things you might want to include on your timeline: When you were born When you went to school When you moved house When you started College When something really exciting happened like a holiday or birthday When you had a big life change such as when you moved house
