Density
2
What is Density? Density is how closely packed together molecules are in a substance. Formula: Density = mass volume D = m V
3
What Unit will we use for density? Any mass unit over any volume unit. Some common examples: g/cm 3 kg/cm 3 g/m 3 mg/mL g/L cg/mm 3
4
If a block has a mass of 24 g and a volume of 15.6 cm 3, what is it’s density? a Divide the mass by the volume. a D = 24 g 15.6 cm 3 a D = 1.53846 g/cm 3 a D = 1.5 g/cm 3
5
Let’s find the density of your textbook. Your book has a mass of 1400 g, a length of 20.68 cm, a width of 3.95 cm, and a height of 26.10 cm.
6
We can also find the mass or volume of a substance using density. The density of iron is 7.86 g/cm 3. If the mass of a piece of iron is 47 g, what is the volume of the iron?
