Local Constituencies Enfield North Enfield Southgate Edmonton

What area does it cover? Edmonton is in north London, above Tottenham, with Chingford and Woodford Green to the east, and Enfield North and Enfield Southgate to the north and west. What are transport connections there? There are no London Underground stations in the constituency, but there are two railway lines to Liverpool Street in the City. What is the history of elections here? Labour held the Edmonton seat from 1945 and 1983, when the Conservatives won. In 1997 it was retaken for Labour by the current MP, Andy Love. Who lives there? Cypriots, both Greek and Turkish, are a sizeable local community. A substantial number of people are of Bangladeshi, Afro-Caribbean and African origin. How are things getting better? A £110 million improvement scheme for the Edmonton Green and Barbot estates was agreed in 1999, with the transfer of 1,300 council houses to two housing trusts. The development of a new shopping centre in Edmonton Green has been important to the area.

Enfield North What area does it cover? Enfield North is the northernmost constituency in London, with industrial and urban centres giving way to more rural green belt areas in the north of the region. This seat is partly industrial, mainly in the area east of the Cambridge Road. In contrast it also adjoins the open countryside of Enfield Chase, bordering Hertfordshire. Engineering, chemicals, printing and food processing are the main industries. Enfield Business Centre, within the constituency, supports local business activity, and Enfield Education Business Partnership has sought to strengthen private investment in schools in the area. What is the history of elections here? The Conservatives held the seat from 1979 to 1997, when Enfield North joined the two other Enfield parliamentary constituencies moving to Labour. Labour's Joan Ryan has held the seat since then. Who lives there? It includes large Turkish, Bangladeshi, Cypriot and Italian communities. How are things getting better? Expansion of the busy North Circular Road (A406), various traffic-calming schemes and improvement of Enfield rail stations and train services are controversial local transport issues.

Predictions 2010 Some people think that: Edmonton will be kept by the Labour Party – a LOT more people will have to vote for the Conservative Party for them to win there. Enfield North will be taken from the Conservative Party from the Labour Party, because the borders of the area have changed and more Conservative supporters now live in the area. Enfield Southgate will be kept by the Conservative Party.

Thinking Which constituency do you live in? Who is your local MP? Which candidate would you vote for in the election?
