2 STEP 1 – UNPACK THE QUESTION Individuals find a sense of belonging by adopting the cultural traditions of the hegemony. How is this concept of belonging shown in Chapter 2 of Swallow the Air? STEP 1: UNPACK THE QUESTION! Individuals Individuals = persons / identity / people / Sense = feeling / perception / impression / awareness Belonging Belonging = fitting in / feel at home / feel safe / feel secure in yourself / feeling good Adopting = accepting / implementing / taking on / taking on board / making part of your life / practising / doing Concept = idea / understanding / perception / point of view Cultural = national / ethnic / racial / religious / Traditions = celebrations / customs / values / beliefs / habits Hegemony = dominant culture / popular group / majority beliefs / the “part” of society which is control (eg: white Christian Australian)

HOW? = what images are created to show… (remember – it’s the language forms and features which CREATE the IMAGES. So you don’t always have to use the “Language forms and features” phrase. STEP 1 – UNPACK THE QUESTION

4 STEP TWO: RE-WRITE THE QUESTION! in simpler – longer sentence(s) In chapter 2 of STA, what language forms and features are used to show that people will feel like they belong to the successful group in society if they practise the customs of white Australian Christians. Or… What images does TJ Winch create that show Aboriginal (non-Christian) people, who attempt to do the same traditional things as the main group in the society, will feel a stronger sense of fitting-in (belonging).

5 WRITE THE (THESIS) STATEMENT SENTENCE: STEP THREE: WRITE THE (THESIS) STATEMENT SENTENCE: 1. In chapter 2 of Swallow The Air, Winch creates clear images to show that alienated individuals who adopt the cultural traditions of the hegemony will find a stronger sense of belonging. OR… 2. In “grab” (ch 2), Winch uses cultural symbols and imagery to show that individuals can find a stronger sense of belonging if they make an effort to adopt the cultural traditions of the hegemony. OR… 3. Winch creates images to suggest that practising popular cultural traditions can enhance an individuals sense of belonging within the hegemony.
