HONOR HONOR VS. DISRESPECT RESPECTING OTHERS BECAUSE OF THE HIGHER AUTHORITIES THEY REPRESENT
2
VALUE EVERY PERSON People need to be valued, loved, and cared for. The general term that is used is “Respect.”
3
Respect To consider worthy of esteem; to reframe from obtruding upon another person’s privacy; to be considerate. Disrespect: uncivil, lack of courtesy.
4
How can we respect (honor) our family? Listen to what they have to say. Take time to care about what they have to contribute to the conversation, and to the family. Be considerate of their needs and desires. Communicate in a respectful and considerate tone - A gentle approach. Exhort others before yourself. Think about others before you think about you.
5
How can we honor our coworkers? Respect the people over you because they are in authority, even if you disagree with them in how the work should get done. Respect the people working with you by helping them when ever needed. Never think you know it all, always think of the coworker’s feelings. (What are they going through?) Be the best example you can. Honor them with character qualities that cause change. Lead by example.
6
Keys to building honor Vision: Honor sees into the heart of people and finds essential character qualities that can be built on. Honor finds respect regardless of the situation. Honor embraces hard situations and comes out with integrity and more respect.
7
Key #2 Respect authority: When meeting a higher ranking officer, the soldier must honor the chain of command whether the soldier admires the ranking officer or not. Learning to respect authority in all situations brings honor to the ranking position and to the unit you serve. When people in authority are looking for workers they can trust, they look for men of honor, women of honor, people with respect, integrity, and people that respect others’ positions in life. (whether high or low positions)
8
Key #3 Discipline: Everything we do carries responsibilities. A child and an adult both have responsibilities within the home. A person of honor understands these responsibilities and does them, up and beyond the call of duty. Don’t just get the job done, meet the goal with great success. Discipline yourself for the task.
9
Key #4 Respecting those that have gone before us: Honor is built into a society by the respect we show for the ones who made our freedoms and characters possible. Honor your parents, along with those that are in authority over you and ones that have gone before you. This is a Biblical principle. This would include showing respect for the one that made it all possible: God! He seems to be the least honored in our society when he needs to be the most honored. Without spiritual direction for any country, family, or community, it will fall apart.
10
Key #5 Value character in people. A country or culture will draw its values and morals from what its people think is honorable. Morals and standards that we show and adopt as a family, community and country, will dictate our culture as a whole. Honor others for their character! It may be them that influence your child and grandchild.
11
Self evaluation: * Do you see yourself as a person of honor? * Do others see you as honorable? * Do you respect those in authority over you? * Do you communicate good morals by your actions? * Do you admire consistent integrity?
12
Honor is also found in the way we present ourselves (our speech) Speak with respect. Show courtesy and proper etiquette in speech. Be sure to say “thank you” and “please” so as to show gratefulness. Don’t whine and complain about things all the time. Don’t use flirtatious words or actions when communicating. Don’t talk about others when they’re not present. Speak positive things; others want to be around positive people. Show respect by addressing others as “sir” or “Mr. Pinkerton.” Show gentleness in our speech so as not to cause anger.
13
Honor is found in the way we present ourselves (our actions) Stand tall and look eye to eye with the people you are talking to. Address others with the proper hand shake, hug, or look. Never face away when you are speaking to someone face to face. Show respect and honor by presenting ourselves properly. However you present yourself should make a lasting impression on the other person. Make sure your hair is combed and your clothes are in order. Take note to make sure your breath and body smell good so it is not offensive.
14
Although honor is not necessarily just the way you look and dress, those do have a lot to do with how others honor you and respect you. If you want to effect other peoples lives, you must be above reproach and a person of honor and deserved respect.
15
Who do you know that you can say you honor? What is it about them that you honor? ( Make a list.) What do you have to change in your life to be a person of honor?
