Excel treats an image as an object on the draw layer. The size, position, and other properties of a picture can be changed, depending on the image format.

Typical image formats are TIF, GIF, PCX, PNG, JPEG, and more. The Insert Picture from File button is on the Insert command tab.

In addition to those on your computer, you can also search the online clip art gallery for more images. The Clip Art button is on the Insert command tab.

In the header/footer section, the code is &[Picture]. Header/footer images can be formatted from the Format Picture dialog box in the Header and Footer Elements group.

A watermark is usually faint in color. Watermarks are intended for printed pages. A watermark is simulated by placing an appropriate image in a header or footer. The image often needs to be sized and colored to serve as a watermark.

All rights reserved. 16 Creating a Hierarchy SmartArt Shape SmartArt is a feature that provides high- quality text illustrations. SmartArt shapes are not linked to worksheet data. SmartArt shapes include a text pane for working with the text. SmartArt shapes include bulleted lists, organization charts, cycles, pyramids, and matrices.

The SmartArt shape is in the Hierarchy category. You can add or delete individual shapes within the chart as needed.

Cycle diagrams show a series of tasks or events that continue and repeat in a circular manner. Some diagrams are cycles; others are radials.

All rights reserved. 24 Using the Research Tool The Research task pane includes tools that help you locate outside data for use in your worksheet. The Thesaurus helps you find words that mean the same thing. The Translation tools help you find words in another language for your selected text. Your Research tools may include a dictionary. Your Research tools may also include an online encyclopedia.

All rights reserved. 30 Setting Document Properties The Document Information Panel includes basic properties such as the author’s name, subject, and keywords. Choose Prepare and Properties from the Microsoft Office menu to open this panel.

Images can be taken from a disk or the Clip Organizer. Pictures have properties that depend on how the image was originally created. You can edit some of these properties. You can use pictures in headers and footers. Some images, based on their size and color, can be used to mimic a watermark.

SmartArt graphics include organization charts with various levels to illustrate relationships among workers.

SmartArt graphics have their own styles and colors. Many can be easily changed into another layout, too. SmartArt graphics are not linked to worksheet data.

All rights reserved. 35 Summary You can use the Research task pane to find words that mean the same thing in the same or a different language. Document properties include information such as the author name, a title, the subject, key words, and general comments.
