2 Classical Greece Background to the Greek City-States: – Early civilizations form in Crete and Turkey – Establish trade with river-valley civilizations – Both fall because of internal problems and wars

3 Ancient Greece Geography prevented political unification – Developed strong city-states instead  Athens and Sparta Develop several types of government throughout history

4 Types of Government in the Greek City-States Democracy (various forms; citizens participate) – Rule by the people (sometimes through reps.) – Direct Democracy – all citizens vote on each issue (Athens) – Representative Democracy – citizens elect officials to make decisions for them (United States) Oligarchy (rule by a small council) – Rule by a few landowners and businessmen Aristocracy (rule by a few wealthy people) – Rule by the wealthy families Tyranny (rule by one person) – Rule by one person with harsh policies

5 Who were Citizens in Ancient Greece? Athens: – Citizens were men – Women, slaves and foreigners could not be citizens – Did not have to own land to be a citizen – Slaves were not based on skin color, but on Prisoner-of-War Status Sparta – All people from the city- state were citizens – Slaves and foreigners could not become citizens – Women could serve in government

6 Main Interactions in Classical Greece Wars with Persia – Fight over control of Greek territory – Persia takes colonies in Greece and limits their freedoms – Greeks defeat Persia  leads to downfall of Persia and increasing strength of Greece Wars between the city-states – Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 BCE) Athens vs. Sparta Leads to downfall of Greek city-states

7 Classical Greece – In Class Assignment Read the assigned handout and answer the reading questions attached to the packet. We will cover the attached reading at the beginning of class tomorrow. One open-response question and several multiple choice questions will come from the content in this reading. Due at the end of class  anything not finished in class must be completed and turned in by the beginning of class tomorrow
