Defining competency ‘Ability to assess plan, implement and evaluate care’ (UKCC 1983) ‘Combination of skills, knowledge, attitudes values and abilities that underpin effective and/ or superior performance in a professional/ occupational area ( ANMC 2000) ‘Combination of attributes enabling performance of a range of professional tasks to the appropriate standard’ (Gonczi et al 1990)

And finally…. Using competencies to measure performance is helpful…. If you don’t know how you are performing then its difficult to make improvements…. Continuous improvement is essential for maintaining high standards of effective and safe care
