What is Civics? -Civics -Study of Citizenship and Government -Citizen- a member of a community with certain rights and responsibilities. -Responsibilities- things we should do and obligations that we fulfill voluntarily

Personal Responsibility
- taking responsibility for one’s actions, accepting the consequences, and understanding your decisions effect those around you Responsibilities: -fiscal – financial -legal- laws or acts passed -moral- knowing the difference between right & wrong

Civic Responsibilities
Be informed- changes in society, laws, etc. Speak Up!- the officials represent your vote and what you want done (or not) Participate in the community and government Respect rights & property of others Respect others opinions & ways of life

Duties of US Citizens Duties- things we HAVE to do Obey laws- made to help people, prevent accidents, maintain order, and protect us (health, safety, & property). Pay taxes- provides money that the government needs to keep it running (armed forces, state/gov’t employees, roads, et-c) Defend Nation- men are required to register with government for military service

Duties of US Citizens 4) Serve in court- prepare to serve on a jury. People depend on others for fair verdict 5) Attend School- benefits you and the government because you need knowledge and skills to be a good citizen
