Date DNA
2
✤ DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid ✤ DNA carries all the genetic information of living organisms.
3
DNA ✤ DNA has a very specific shape called a double helix ✤ The shape was discovered by three scientists. ✤ James Watson, Francis Crick, and Rosalind Franklin
4
DNA ✤ DNA has section that are codes for making proteins. ✤ These specific codes are called genes.
5
What makes up DNA? ✤ DNA is composed of 3 major parts: Nitrogen Base, Sugar and a phosphate.
6
Parts of DNA ✤ DNA has four different Nitrogen Bases ✤ These are Adenine, Guanine, Thymine, and Cytosine
7
Nitrogen Bases ✤ Each Nitrogen Base pairs with another base. ✤ The nitrogen bases of Adenine are always paired with Thymine. ✤ The nitrogen bases of Cytosine are always paired with Guanine.
8
PRACTICE ✤ If DNA has the following sequence on one helix, what would be the other side: ✤ ATTAGCACGGCAT ✤ TAATCGTGCCGTA ✤ GCGATTAGCTAAT ✤ CGCTAATCGATTA
