Repeated Subtraction: Division
2
Repeated subtraction What is repeated subtraction? It is subtracting until we reach 0 or until we can’t subtract any more.
3
Dividing using repeated subtraction
Rules for repeated subtraction Step 1: we will subtract the dividend by the divisor. So 45 ÷ 9 = – 9 Step 2: keep subtracting the divisor until you can’t subtract anymore. Step 3: count how many times you subtracted the divisor.
4
Step 1 Step 1: we will subtract the dividend by the divisor. 32 ÷ 8 = Dividend is 32 and divisor is 8. 32 – 8 = 24
5
Step 2 Step 2: keep subtracting the divisor until you can’t subtract anymore. 32 ÷ 8 = 32 – 8 = 24 = 16 = 8 8 - 8 = 0
6
Step 3 Step 3: count how many times you subtracted the divisor. 32 ÷ 8 = 32 – 8 = 24 – 8 = 16 – 8 = 8 – 8 = We subtracted 8 how many times? So our answer is…..
7
Let’s try this together
49 ÷ 7 = What is step 1? What is step 2? What is step 3?

Let’s try this together
81 ÷ 9 = Step 1: Step 2: Step 3:
9
Try it on your own 27 ÷ 9 = 27 – 9 = 18 18 – 9 = 9 9 – 9 = 0 How many times did we subtract 9?
10
Try it on your own 56 ÷ 8 =7
