Physical Changes Physical changes are in size, shape, volume, and state of matter. Sawing wood, shredding paper, and melting wax are all physical changes. Copper can be hammered into sheets, and gemstones carved into beautiful shapes as a result. In each case, the substance does not change into something else.

Chemical changes A chemical change occurs when one kind of matter changes into another type of matter with different properties. Cooking a potato is one example of a chemical change. So is rusting iron. It’s not always easy to tell when a chemical reaction occurs. Changes can cause heat, light, sound, and fizzing.
