Classification of Matter Chapter 9 PPT notes

Substances Element – all of the atoms in a sample of matter that have the same identity. – Example: Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen Compound – atoms of two or more elements combined. – H 2 O, Hydrogen and Oxygen Substance – either an element or a compound.

Mixtures A material made up of two or more substances that can be separated by physical means. – Example: sweater, salt water Solution =Another name for a homogeneous mixture - a material in which 2 or more substances are uniformly spread out.

Colloids and Suspensions Colloid – heterogeneous mixture that, like a solution, never settles. – Example: milk Tyndall effect – the scattering of light by particles in a mixture. – milk

Suspensions Suspension – a heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle. – Example: pond water

Physical Properties Physical property – any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the substances that make up the material. – Examples: color, shape, size, etc.

Physical Changes a change in size, shape, or state of matter is a physical change. – Example: changing the color, size, shape, etc. as long as the substance stays the same…water melting, cutting a piece of wood.

Chemical Change A change of one substance to another substance is a chemical change. – Lighting a match, exploding firecracker, etc.

Chemical Property A characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can undergo a certain chemical change. – Example: if a substance if flammable or combustible….gasoline, motoroil…etc.

Law of Conservation of Mass Matter is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical change = law of conservation of mass. - When you burn a piece of wood, matter changes form, but there is still the same amount of matter.

Assignment Do pg. 261, 1-4. Do pg. 265 – 266, 1-10; 1-10 and # 11 – 15. (with a partner if you wish).
