3 An Overview… NOUN A NOUN is a person, place, thing, or idea. A COMMON NOUN is a general person, place, thing, or idea. A PROPER NOUN is a specific person, place, thing, or idea. It is capitalized. common nounProper Noun cityChicago mallLouis-Joliet Mall carFord Mustang

4 An Overview… PRONOUN A PRONOUN replaces a noun. Examples: The boy went for a walk. He went for a walk. The girl rode her bike. She rode her bike. The teachers assigned homework. They assigned homework. When you use a pronoun in your writing, make sure to first use the noun to make it clear who or what you’re talking about.

5 An Overview… ADJECTIVE An ADJECTIVE describes a noun or a pronoun. Examples: blue sky cranky baby mean dog

6 An Overview… VERB A VERB shows an action or expresses a state of being. Examples: The rain fell from the sky. (action verb) The child skated on the ice. (action verb) I am happy. (helping verb)

8 An Overview… ADVERB An ADVERB modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs help make meaning clear by telling how, when, where, or to what extent something is true. Adverbs often end in -ly. Examples: carefullysometimesinsidefully quicklyonceherevery

9 An Overview… PREPOSITION A PREPOSITION is a word that relates its objects to some other word in the sentence. Examples: Martha moved to Washington. The ball flew over the car. The bug crawled under the rock.

10 An Overview… CONJUNCTION A CONJUNCTION is a word that connects words or groups of words. Examples: The journey was hard and dangerous. I almost didn’t do my homework, but I realized that was a bad idea. Should I go to the mall or the movies?

11 An Overview… INTERJECTION An INTERJECTION is a single word or short group of words that is used to express a feeling or emotion. Examples: Whew! That was hard. WOW! I got straight A’s on my report card! Oh, look at that beautiful scenery.
