1 Parts of Speech Today we will be looking at 2 parts of speech: NOUNS and PRONOUNS

2 NOUNS A NOUN is a person, place, thing, or idea. Examples: boy, school, apple, fear There are many different types of nouns, but the only two types of nouns you are responsible for knowing are: PROPER NOUNS and COMMON NOUNS.

3 Proper Nouns vs. Common Nouns A PROPER NOUN is a name of a specific person, place, thing, or idea. The first letter of a proper noun must be capitalized. Examples: Mount Rushmore, Mr. Mather, Jenny, Africa, Judaism A COMMON NOUN is the name of a general person, place, thing, or idea. The first letter of a common noun must be lower-cased. Examples: rock, principal, beauty, continent, democracy

4 PRONOUNS A PRONOUN is a word that replaces a noun or another pronoun. Example: he, she, it, they, his, hers, its, their The ANTECEDENT of a pronoun is the word that the pronouns replaces or refers to. The student brought his book to class. What is the antecedent of his?

5 Pronoun Rule #1 Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in number. What is wrong with these? A student who is focused knows that their hard work will pay off. Students must take English, Math, History, and Science because it is required.

6 Pronoun Rule #1 Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in number. Corrections: A student who is focused knows that his hard work will pay off. Students must take English, Math, History, and Science because they are required.

7 Pronoun Rule #2 Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in person. What is wrong with these? The boys know that our friendship will last forever. My phone stopped working after I dropped him in the sink. If a student studies, you will pass the test.
