Adobe Flash Pros: self-contained, highly flexible software package. Relatively to easy to build complex interactive narrative stories. Author has complete control over design, narrative structure and multimedia elements Cons: expensive software. Doesn’t work on iOS devices (iphones, ipads etc). Requires basic understanding of Actionscript coding

Can be built using browser – no need for proprietary software. Large community – so lots of online help. Easy to try new designs. Cons: security from hackers not great. Quality control of ‘plugins’ is poor. A lot of wordpress sites have same basic structure – so can get samey. For wordpress.com you need your own hosting set-up (CfJ provides this for students)

Medium www.medium.com Pros: long-form narrative platform. Very straightforward to build scrolling narrative pieces Cons: Not many options over basic design structure. Your content is hosted on their platform – so will only exist as long as their business survives

Interlude www.interlude.fm Pros: video-based interactive storytelling tool. Intuitive,rowser-based planning and creation interface. Cons: Limited options over structure of pieces. Your content is hosted on their platform – so will only exist as long as their business survives.

Racontr www.racontr.com Pros. Drag and drop dashboard allows you to build interactive scenarios based on templates. Quite a flexible system in terms of design. Cons. More complex than some browser- based platforms. Free account allows max of 100mB of media. Your content is hosted on their platform – so will only exist as long as their business survives.

Storybench www.storybench.com Pros. Not so much of a platform, more a collection of DIY tools to enable you to build specific types of project. Cons. Some projects require a relatively high degree of coding/understanding of web architecture

Wix.com www.wix.com Pros. Very simple template-based web site creation. Makes good-looking stories very easy to create. No coding knowledge required. Cons. Limited number of design templates, so a lot of content looks the same. Your content is hosted on their platform – so will only exist as long as their business survives.
