Duties of the President Commander in Chief - Overseer of 4 major forces and manages a defense budget Responsibility, with Senate consent, to appoint head executive departments and federal cour judges. Foreign Policy representative - makes treaties with Senate consent, hosts foreign officials, meets with heads of state, appoints head ambassadors to represent US in other countries Most important duty - to "faithfully execute" the laws within the US

President's Term and Salary Originally the Constitution did not specify how may 4 year terms a president can serve (22nd Amendment, 1951)

Salary and Benefits Constitution did not state the pay rate for presendt or salary 1969 - 2001 - pay was $200,000 and $50,000 for official duty expenses $100,000 nontaxable travel expense

Salary and Benefits Airforce One Private plane, helicopters, limousines Free medical, dental and top of line health care

The White House 132 room mansion Swimming pool, bowling alley, movie theatre, tennis courts, cooking staff

Life after Presidency When presidents retire, they get $148,000/year Secret Service for life ***Widowed wives receive $20,000/year

President's Qualifications (recap) 35 yrs old Natural born citizen Resident of US for at least 14 years (same for VP)

Government Experience Not required, but an unwritten, important qualification Most presidents serve in Senate or as state governors

Importance of Money Must have access to large amounts to campaign Spending caps for campaigns regulated by government

Political Stance Extreme liberalism and conservatism never won an election. Moderate stances win the nomination for a party

Personal Characteristics Most presidents have come from middle class backgrounds White middle class, married, financially successful men Geraldine Ferraro No woman has yet been elected as president or vice president

Presidential Succession 8 Presidents have died in office 4 killed by bullets; 4 died of natural causes Order of succession ratified in 1967 after JFK was shot to create an order of succession Presidential disability - VP becomes acting power for 2 reasons: 1.If President informs Congresss he can't go anymore 2.If President is disabled or deceased

William Henry Harrison -The 9th President, who died in 1841 of pneumonia and pleurisy. Zachary Taylor --The 12th President, who died in 1850 of bilious fever, typhoid fever, and cholera morbus, following a heat stroke. Abraham Lincoln--The 16th President, was assassinated in1865. Lincoln was the first of four presidents to be assassinated. James Garfield--The 20th President, who was assassinated in1881. William McKinley--The 25th President, who was assassinated 1901. Warren G. Harding --The 29th President, who died in1923 of a suspected heart attack Franklin Delano Roosevelt --The 32nd President, who died in 1945, of a cerebral hemorrhage John F. Kennedy-The 35th President, who was assassinated in1963.

VPs Role 1.Is in charge of the Senate and votes in case of a tie 2.Helps decide if the President is disabled 3.FYI - 14 VPs have become president - 9 have succeeded to office due to death or resignation 4.Participate in policy discussions, speeches, defending president's policies and represent President overseas
