Other Stuff in the Solar System

Dwarf Planets Large objects orbiting the sun that do not have enough mass to be considered planets

Asteroids Small Solar bodies = space rocks Three types: Carbon, Metalic, and Stony Most lie between the sun and Jupiter

Meteoroids, Meteors and Meteorites Small asteroids = Meteoroids When then enter the atmosphere of a planet the start to glow (friction). We see them as shooting starts; at this point they are Meteors If the meteor survives impact on the planets surface, it becomes a meteorite

Comets Icy asteroids (frozen gasses) Charged particles from the solar wind react with the ice, and create a glowing atmosphere around the comet and sometimes a tail

Asteroid Belt Between mars and jupiter there is a large ring of asteroids

Kuiper Belt Past Neptune there is another ring of icy bodies (Pluto lives here)

Oort Cloud Much farther away there is a “cloud” of space dust and ice far away from our planets and sun.

Putting it all together Reflecting on how the sun’s formation releases a massive wave of energy, why does it make sense that the asteroid belt is followed by the Kuiper belt, and finally the Oort cloud? (Hint F=ma)
