4 Letter Expert Every child gets to be a Letter Expert Your child will bring home a bag/envelope with a cardboard letter, sentence strip, and a book. Help them find pictures to represent the beginning sound of the letter.-Use clip art or magazine pictures. Read the book with them.

5 Sight Words Words will be listed in our Homework folders and websites. Most sight words can not be sounded out. Must be learned by sight. Fun games to review the words. Ex: Which words rhyme with bike - like Make flash cards out of words to review at home. Children should be able to read and write them.

6 Read with your child Discuss with your child *parts of a book – cover, title page... *who are the characters? *what is the setting? *what do you think will happen next? *what words rhyme?

7 3 Ways to Read a Book Read the pictures (Picture walk) discuss what is happening in the pictures. Read the words. (Parent or child) Retell the story. (Stories such as the Gingerbread Man)

8 Listening Comprehension After you read a story to your child, have them: *Draw a picture of what happened. *Predict what might happen at the end of story. (When you leave off the ending) *Sequence the story. Story retell

9 Reading Grades *Reading Sight Words (flash cards or in sentences). *Retell a story orally *Letter and Sound recognition *Listening Comprehension

10 Writer’s Workshop Daily Message –Count words in sentences, Capital letters, spacing, ending marks. Journals Predictable Charts Writing in books

11 Fun Activities to help your child write Chalk Shaving cream Paint with water/paint Dry erase boards and markers/ page protectors Write with a highlighter and have them trace Write with different kinds of markers, pens.

12 Language Grades Write dictation sentences that contain sight words. Ex: I can see you. Books – writing matches the pictures in the book.
