3 Carbohydrates There are 2 major types of carbohydrate. The 2 types are simple & complex Simple carbohydrates are known as simple sugars. Complex carbohydrates are also known as starches. The body breaks down carbs into simple sugars. Your body then creates insulin. Insulin is needed to move sugar around. Sugar is stored as a source of energy. Carbohydrates turn sugar into energy. Carbohydrates are in fruits.

4 Fats Fat is a component of food. Foods like fruits and veggies have low fats. Other foods have lots. They include nuts, butter, oils, and meat. Fat is an important part of a healthy diet. There are 3 major fats: Unsaturated fats: – These are found in plant foods and fish. – These may be good for heart health Saturated fats – Found in meats and other animal products. – Also in palm and coconut oils. – Increases blood cholesterol levels. – Increases the risk of heart diseases. Trans fats – These fats are found in margarine sticks. – They are in baked and fried foods. – These also raise the risk of heart disease.

5 Protein Your body uses protein to make hemoglobins (hee-muh-glow-bins) Other proteins are used to build cardiac muscles. Best sources: – Beef – Poultry – Fish – Eggs – Dairy – Nuts – Seeds Protein builds up, maintains, and replaces body tissue. Definition: – Protein (any of a large group of nitrogenous organic compounds that are essential constituents of living cells; consist of polymers of amino acids; essential in the diet of animals for growth and for repair of tissues.

6 Fibre Fibre is good for your bowels. It is found in plants. Fibre is found in: –Bran muffins –Brown rice –Fruit –Oatmeal Fibre is an important part of a healthy diet. It’s recommended for children and adults. People who eat lots of fibre is are less likely to be obese. Important to treat and prevent constipation.

7 Vitamins There are two types of vitamins: fat soluble and water soluble. Fat-solubles: –Can stay in your body for up to 6 months! Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble vitamins. Water-solubles: –Vitamins don’t get stored as much in your body. –They travel through your bloodstream. These vitamins need to be replaced regularily. Some vitamins are: –Vitamin A –Vitamin B –Vitamin C –Vitamin D –Vitamin E –Vitamin K A vitamin is an ogranic compund required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism.

8 Minerals Red meat is a good source of iron. Some main minerals are: –Calcium –Iron –Potassium –Sodium Minerals help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy. The 2 types of minerals are: Macro Minerals & Trace Minerals. Marco means “Large” in Greek. ( Meaning you need large amounts of minerals. )

9 Water Water is a chemical substance. Its made of oxygen and air. It is vital to all forms of life. All living things need water to survive. Your body is 60-70% water. Drinking water is important for good health. Your blood is mostly water. You lose water through peeing, breathing, and sweating. You lose more water when you are active.
