5.  Narrow victory denied Kennedy the clean mandate he needed to convince Congress that the people agreed with his plans.  Congress rejected plans like the reducing of taxes to fight the rising unemployment, provide federal aid to education, and health care plans.  Kennedy’s popularity and presidential power allowed him to solve problems without Congress

6.  Fought the major steel producers increasing price and won in the end  Although rich, he helped the poor  Past the Area Redevelopment act in 1961, which gave financial assistance to economically distressed regions.  Raised minimum wages from $1.00 to $1.25 per hour

7.  In April 1961, Soviets launched the first human into space in a one-orbit flight  John Glenn was the first American in space  Khrushchev claimed the Soviet lead in space showed superiority in communism
