Nouns A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing or idea. –Persons: Mrs. Platinsky, teacher, student –Places: Lazar Middle School, classroom –Things: desk, football –Ideas: happiness, self-control, democracy

Common and Proper Nouns A proper noun names a particular person, place, thing or idea. A proper noun is always capitalized. A common noun names any one of a group of persons, places, things or ideas. –It generally is not capitalized.

Concrete and Abstract Nouns A concrete noun names something that can be recognized through any of the five senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, and hear) An abstract noun names something that cannot be recognized through the senses.
