3 Nouns A word used to name a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. –common nouns: names any one of a group of persons, places, things, or ideas. NOT CAPITALIZED –woman, nation, event, holiday, language –proper noun: names a particular person, place, thing, or idea. ALWAYS CAPITALIZED –Queen Isabella, Lindsey Miller, Jodi Foster, Matt Damon

4 Concrete vs. Abstract Nouns concrete noun names an object or event that can be perceived by the senses. –sneeze, star, gravel, cinnamon, Cincinnati, Paul Brown Stadium, Bronson Arroyo. abstract nouns name a quality, a characteristic, or an idea. –peace, civilization, honor, courage, Romanticism, Manifest Destiny

5 Collective and Compound Nouns collective nouns name a group. –jury, band, family, class, flock, committee, Lebanon High School Boys’ Basketball team. a compound noun consists of two or more words used together as one noun. –some are written as one word, some are separate words, and some are hyphenated. stairway, butterfly lieutenant governor, ceiling fan, Golden Gate Bridge sister-in-law, jack-of-all-trades, stick-in-the-mud
